Ubiquiti is pursuing an interesting concept with the new AI Theta security camera system for the UniFi Protect surveillance system. The manufacturer separates the camera optics from the other hardware that is normally directly associated with it, in order to enable more flexible and also more discreet placement.
With this in mind, Ubiquiti is particularly mindful of locations where traditional cameras are distracting and out of place. At the same time, the new concept also allows the devices to be placed in a much more inconspicuous manner.
Up to 30 meters between lens and main unit
As the manufacturer reports, Theta supports various lenses, including 360-degree lenses or telephoto lenses that can be installed flush in the wall or ceiling with a base area of just 22 millimeters in diameter. The distance to the main unit can be up to 30 meters. As with various other UniFi cameras, power is supplied via the Ethernet connection according to the PoE standard.
High-quality camera optics and AI functions
The maximum resolution of the cameras is 4K at 24 frames per second, Ubiquiti promises impressive image dynamics and advanced AI functions – for example, the camera systems should focus specifically on the presence of unknown people.
In addition to the camera itself, the system can be expanded to include audio modules with integrated loudspeakers and microphones. In addition, optional movable mounts are available as accessories for more flexibility in positioning the lenses.
The new camera system can be used with the UniFi Protect surveillance system that we have already presented and offers a wide range of possible uses, from targeted video recording when you are absent to 24/7 recording. UniFi Protect is not directly compatible with Apple Home, but can be reliably integrated into HomeKit via a Homebridge plugin
Ubiquiti has not yet announced any details about the official launch of AI Theta. The cameras can initially only be ordered as part of the manufacturer’s “Early Access” program, the price per unit is 299 dollars.
