The new title is called “Return to Monkey Island” and aims to add a new game to the classic Monkey Island series. It should also solve a cliffhanger that has existed for years. But does the game live up to fans’ expectations?
“Return to Monkey Island”
“Return to Monkey Island” was first announced on April 1st. As a result, many fans initially thought the announcement was a very elaborate April Fool’s joke. But already on April 3rd the game was finally and seriously announced. Since then it has been clear: A sequel to the popular series is in the works and is entitled “Return to Monkey Island”. The Monkey Island games are point-to-click adventures that tell an exciting story. But the fact that it’s a sequel to a very popular game isn’t the only thing special about this game.
Additionally, the game’s team managed to bring back the original creator of the series, Ron Gilbert. It was also he who first announced the game in a tweet and consequently confirmed it. Ron Gilbert describes the new game as the first true sequel to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, which was released in 1992. The game ended with a now iconic cliffhanger. Since then, no sequel to the series has been able to adequately solve this cliffhanger. However, this is about to change.
Ron Gilbert left LucasArts after the release of Monkey Island 2 and is now returning. There hasn’t been a sequel to the series since 2009, and Ron Gilbert hasn’t worked with the studio since 1992. Now, however, that is changing and Gilbert will accompany “Return to Monkey Island” not only as co-producer but also as writer. What does this mean for the new game?
A worthy sequel?
At first glance, the new gameplay trailer may irritate some fans. The animation style is a bit strange at first sight and breaks with the style of the original games. For many fans, this shatters the illusion of a true sequel that matches the game not just in name but in spirit. However, if you look past the animation, you quickly find hope for the new game.
Just the fact that the creator of the best games in the series is returning is reason for hope. Many fans are hoping that the 1992 cliffhanger can finally be satisfactorily resolved. According to Ron Gilbert, this should definitely happen. Likewise, many beloved characters should return in “Return to Monkey Island”. These include, for example, Carla, Wally, Stan and Otis, who fans will know well from previous installments in the series.
A specific release date for the game is not yet known, but it is expected to be released in 2022. It is also known that the game will probably start as a time-limited Nintendo Switch Exclusive for the time being. The game’s official website is designed in a lovely point-to-click style and gives a good insight into how the game works.
