New year, new luck – and certainly some new Apple products too. With this article we want to give some thought to possible new products in the coming year 2022.
Will the Apple TV, a new iPod HiFi, the car or finally the AR / VR glasses arrive? These are questions that Apple fans and journalists have been asking for years, almost decades. As for most of these things, we can clearly say “No” here too. But a representative who has appeared in the rumor mill for years made it into the article this year …
The year of M …
Apple will definitely continue to upgrade and convert its Mac line. While we saw the first Macs with Apple Silicon in 2020, last year the iMac and the new MacBook Pro also saw hardware in a new design for the first time. The trend will continue this year. We would like to leave open whether we will see a new processor – the M2. In the end, these are just marketing games with names.
MacBook (Air) 2022
The MacBook Air was Apple’s most successful notebook in the last 10 years, and we can count on the fourth design line here. Given its success, Apple will likely keep the name as well. We expect a model with slimmer bezels that will continue to appeal mainly to beginners. The notch? We’ll probably see here too. Colorful housings, similar to the iMac 2020, are also under discussion.
Actually, it’s only been a matter of time for a long time – and the availability of chips due to Corona. Apple will also revise the large iMac – previously it was 27 inches. The design is definitely based on the smaller models, Apple will also offer variants with the M1 Pro and M1 Max. Hopefully there will also be “weaker” and therefore cheaper models.
Mac Mini, Mac Pro – xMac?
Apple will go a step further in terms of performance this year. The rumors speak of processors with up to 32 high-performance cores and up to 128 GPU cores.
Will we really see the Mac Pro? We assume that Apple will continue to offer Intel models here as well. There are also rumors about a more powerful Mac Mini – a Mac Mini Pro or whatever. Whether it is “just” a Mac Mini with more powerful processors, or a Mini with PCI slots, which would resemble the earlier xMac wishes, remains questionable. I’m “only” assuming a slightly more powerful Mac Mini. The darker case, which Apple only used once for the last Intel Mac Mini, would be free again in terms of design …
Even more iPad Pro
The iPad Pro was given a new display and processor last year. This year Apple is to commemorate a new design with a glass back. The iPad Pro should also be able to be charged wirelessly – and lapel charging should also be available. Hand on heart: who needs it? We don’t know … We have been asking ourselves this question about the iPad for a long time. Otherwise it can be assumed that further technology will “trickle down”. The small iPad Pro will have a mini LED display, and the M1 could also be passed on to other cheaper devices.
iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3
Like the amen in prayer – we’ll see a new iPhone in the fall. The new generation should finally get an upgrade in terms of camera hardware. We will almost certainly see four models again, with the Pro series Apple could finally do without the notch and instead show a “punch hole”.
The iPhone SE 3 could come in the spring – and will unfortunately continue to rely on “the old design”. There is an A15 chip and 5G at an attractive price.
Apple Watch Series 8
Ming-Chi Kuo currently assumes that we will see three Apple Watch models next year. A cheaper SE variant, a classic model – but also a robust outdoor variant. Hopefully Apple will come up with more than a robust case here. Some niche manufacturers now offer sports watches with extremely long runtimes and thus have a large USP compared to Apple. When it comes to sensors, rumors are going in the direction of a body temperature sensor, which smaller gadgets like the Oura ring can do without any problems. From my point of view (that of a diabetic with a glucose sensor on his arm), glucose measurement remains wishful thinking.
Everything AirPods Pro or what?
Actually, the AirPods Pro 2 would have been expected this year, this is where the chip crisis probably struck. The top model of the in-ear series will introduce new features – but which ones? When it comes to sound, Apple will have to go a step further and offer functions similar to those of the AirPods 3. Are fitness functions coming? From my point of view it would be possible, but unlikely. Apple is fairly certain to support Losless Audio in one way or another.
The HomePod has to come
Apple seems to be very successful with the HomePod Mini – but the original HomePod is still history. I assume that Apple will bring a new model here. The HomePod Mini is nice, but not enough for all applications. In addition, the HomePod was far too complex or too expensive to manufacture. In a new model, Apple will focus on simpler, cheaper hardware and thus be able to offer the device at a better price. The company will use a processor from the Apple Watch – instead of an iPhone processor – as in the mini model. Apple was still releasing new features for the big HomePod (first) over the year like the HDMI return channel.
Apple Verse 2022 – The AR / VR Glasses
The rumors persist and there have been many indications for months or even years: Apple is developing an AR / VR headset. Most recently, the group wanted to recruit Meta employees on the one hand, and prevent its own poaching on the other.
Without question, Apple has a lot “in hand” that could speak for the success of such glasses. On the other hand, one question remains: What is the killer application? It’s nice if Apple’s solution is rumored to be significantly easier than that of the competition. It’s great when Apple can offer all of its services there. In the end, however, the question remains: what for? In the past few years, it seems like AR / VR glasses are the answer to a question that nobody has asked. Maybe not yet? In the past few decades, Apple has often been able to establish products and markets equally. The tablet was new and not invented over ten years ago – and today Apple is the top dog with the iPad in a market that the company created for itself. Admittedly, there is already competition in this field, but maybe Apple will make it “right again”, like with smartphones or smartwatches – or even Bluetooth headphones.
What shouldn’t last in 2022
We don’t just want to think about possible new products, we also want to look at the other side of the coin. Apple currently has a lot of old hardware in its range, which in our opinion is really not good value for money. At the Apple price point, buying this hardware almost cannot be justified.
Apple Watch Series 3
The Apple Watch Series 3 is a few years under its belt, but is still on offer. How long there will be updates here is uncertain – and the hardware is now really slow. Without question – an Apple Watch Series 3 that has already been purchased should and can continue to be used. From our point of view, however, buying them new makes no sense. The price starts at 219 euros, the much stronger Apple Watch SE costs only 80 euros more.
The Intel Mac (Mini and more)
We would only like to dedicate a short paragraph to Macs. In the midst of the switch to Apple Silicon, the price structure is currently very confused. There is still the Intel Mac Mini – and yes, there are good reasons, such as Bootcamp and external GPUs, for this model – but this is completely overpriced. The situation is similar with other Intel models.
iPod Touch – there are still iPods …
In 2019 Apple presented another iPod Touch. Apart from that, the iPod range has now been completely discontinued. Even then, the performance was not up to date. An A10 Fusion Chip works inside – the same processor as in the iPhone 7.
Anyone who wants to listen to music on their iPod Touch – and really only that – will be well served. But for a new price from 229 euros with 32 GB of memory, the device with such old hardware is simply too expensive.
The iPod Touch is also being advertised as a game machine in the context of Apple Arcade. According to our own test, we can say: Many “more extensive” Apple Arcade games have a really difficult time on the iPod Touch.
… and what about beats?
A question that would be worth an entire article (and which we will certainly also take a look at): What is Apple actually planning to do with Beats? At the end of last year, Apple discontinued some headphones in the United States. Apple is struggling to position itself with the subsidiary brand’s line-up. Some models are really very old and, in our opinion, not worth the current price. First of all the Beats Solo 3 from 2016, the RRP here is 200 euros. There is a lot more sound for less money …
End does not mean attitude
The above four examples do not necessarily have to mean that Apple should completely discontinue the respective product lines – rather, that prices have to change or that the products have to be updated each time.
An exciting Apple year 2022
Are we really getting AR / VR glasses or not? What will the new iPhone look like, will there be a new, large HomePod and what will the services be like? How long will Apple continue to support Intel processors and what will the next iteration of Apple Silicon look like? We will have some of these answers this year. We look forward to an exciting Apple year 2022 – together with you!
